Forces

A force is a push or a pull, and forces are what change the way things move. This unit covers contact and non-contact forces, gravity and the difference between weight and mass, friction, net and balanced forces, measuring forces with spring scales, simple machines, and the electrostatic and gravitational forces that act at a distance, along with magnets and electromagnets. Eleven core lessons cover the Stage 4 dot points, with four extension lessons on Newton's laws and pressure for enrichment.

What Is a Force? Contact and Non-Contact
SC4-FOR-01 · Distinguish between direct (contact) and indirect (non-contact) forces acting between objects.
3
Friction (Types and Effects)
SC4-FOR-01 · Practical: investigate the effects of a range of direct and indirect forces (friction).
12
Electrostatic and Gravitational Forces
SC4-FOR-01 · Electrostatic and gravitational forces exerted between objects.
2
Gravity and Weight vs Mass
SC4-FOR-01 · Gravitational force between objects; weight = mass x g; motion of objects in orbit.
4
Net Force and Balanced Forces
SC4-FOR-01 · Use force diagrams to model balanced and unbalanced forces and analyse them to predict motion.
13
Forces and Energy
SC4-FOR-01 · Examine the relationship between force and energy.

Measuring Forces (Spring Scales)
SC4-WS-04 · Select and use appropriate equipment, including spring scales, to make and record observations of forces.
14
Magnets: Polarity, Attraction and Repulsion
SC4-FOR-01 · Magnets attract and repel by polarity; practical investigation of the effect of distance on magnetic force.
15
Magnetic Fields and Electromagnets
SC4-FOR-01 · Map magnetic fields; build and compare electromagnets (practical).
10
Simple Machines (Levers and Pulleys)
SC4-FOR-01 · Simple machines (levers and pulleys) change the magnitude of a force; ATSI Peoples' application of knowledge about forces.
11
Forces: Unit Synthesis
SC4-FOR-01 · Synthesis with Working Scientifically: plan and conduct a forces investigation and draw conclusions.
