Year 11 Maths Advanced MAV-11-03 Checkpoint 1

Checkpoint Quiz 1

This checkpoint covers Translations, Reflections, and Dilations of Functions (Lessons 1–3).

📋

Quick Review

  • Translations: $y = f(x) + k$ shifts the graph vertically ($k > 0$ up, $k < 0$ down, changes the range but not the domain); $y = f(x - h)$ shifts the graph horizontally ($h > 0$ right, $h < 0$ left, changes the domain but not the range).
  • Reflections: $y = -f(x)$ reflects in the $x$-axis, so $(x, y) \to (x, -y)$; $y = f(-x)$ reflects in the $y$-axis, so $(x, y) \to (-x, y)$.
  • Dilations: $y = af(x)$ is a vertical dilation by factor $a$ from the $x$-axis ($a > 1$ stretch, $0 < a < 1$ compress); $y = f(bx)$ is a horizontal dilation by factor $\dfrac{1}{b}$ from the $y$-axis ($b > 1$ compresses, $0 < b < 1$ stretches).
  • Reading the rule: A constant added or multiplied outside the function changes $y$-values; a constant added or multiplied inside the function changes $x$-values, and horizontal effects are often the opposite of what the sign suggests.
