Synthesis scenario, design an off-grid eco-resort
Scenario
You are designing the energy system for an off-grid eco-resort in outback Queensland, 200 km from the nearest electricity grid. The resort needs a reliable, clean energy supply for 20 guest rooms, a kitchen, a pool pump, and outdoor lighting. It must run 24 hours a day, all year round.
(a) Which energy generation source(s) would you use, and why are they suitable for outback Queensland? Name at least two.
(b) How would the resort store energy to keep the lights on all night when solar panels are not generating? Name the storage technology and explain how it works.
(c) Would you wire the resort's guest room lights in series or parallel? Explain why, using the correct scientific reason related to voltage and current.
(d) The resort's total power demand is 15 kW and it runs 24 hours/day. Use E = P × t to calculate how many kWh of energy the resort needs per day and per year. Show your working.
