Year 8 Science · Unit 2 · Lesson 02
Challenge Worksheet
Learning Goals
Explain it to a Year 4 student
Imagine your younger cousin has never heard of chemical symbols. Use the sentence starters below to explain them clearly. You can use real examples from everyday life or from the lesson.
"A chemical symbol is like..."
"Scientists use symbols instead of full names because..."
"The tricky part is that some symbols look strange, like Fe for iron, and that's because..."
"If we didn't have symbols, writing chemistry would be like..."
1. A student argues: "Scientists should just write out the full English name of each element in formulas, it would be easier for everyone to understand." Evaluate this argument. Would using full element names instead of symbols be better or worse for science? Use at least two pieces of evidence from the lesson to support your answer.
2. Some element symbols (like H for hydrogen and Ca for calcium) closely match the English name, while others (like Fe for iron and Na for sodium) seem completely unrelated. Why does this inconsistency exist, and do you think it is a problem for scientists today? Explain your reasoning.
