Because… chain
Fill in the missing steps. This chain shows how multiple systems work together to support stable internal conditions during exercise.
Overall outcome (homeostasis during exercise):
Real-world context
During a school beep test at an Australian school, students run back and forth repeatedly until they cannot keep up with the beeps. Their breathing rate increases sharply, their heart pumps faster, they sweat, and they feel muscles working hard. Within about 30 minutes of stopping, most of their body measures return to resting levels. At least four body systems are working together the whole time to keep internal conditions stable enough for function to continue.
(a) Identify the four body systems from this lesson that are working together during the beep test. For each system, describe the specific contribution it makes to maintaining homeostasis during this activity.
(b) What would happen to homeostasis during the beep test if the respiratory system stopped increasing its gas exchange rate? Trace the effect through at least two other systems using cause-and-effect language.
1. A student writes: "Only the circulatory system keeps the body stable." Explain why this is a weak explanation. What is missing, and how would you make it stronger using the lesson's ideas about system interaction?
