Learning Goals
Find the mistake
A student wrote this answer
"A plant that has its leaves removed will be fine because the roots are still intact. Roots are the only part that matter, as long as the roots are working, the rest of the plant can still grow. Leaves are just decoration. The plant might look a bit bare, but it won't be affected in any important way because the living system only depends on roots."
1. Identify at least two scientific mistakes in this student's answer. State each error clearly.
2. Rewrite the student's answer so that it is scientifically correct. Your version should use cause-and-effect language and explain why the plant system is interconnected. Use at least two scientific terms from the lesson (e.g. component, disruption, interaction, system effect).
3. Why is it easy to make the student's mistake? What everyday idea might lead someone to think only one component matters in a living system?
1. In 2019–2020, the Black Summer bushfires burned through approximately 18.6 million hectares of Australian bushland, destroying enormous areas of native vegetation. Using the interdependence principle from this lesson, identify and explain at least three cascading effects this disruption would have had on living systems, covering both plant and animal examples.
2. Using the lesson's animal example (reduced gas exchange), predict and explain the effects on at least two other aspects of the organism's function. Be specific about the cause-and-effect chain connecting the disruption to each downstream effect.
