Learning Goals
Fill the gap
Choose the correct word from the word bank to complete each sentence. Not all words will be used.
An system is a group of organs working together to carry out one major function for the organism. The heart, blood vessels and blood form the system, which transports substances around the body. The lungs and air passages belong to the system, which is responsible for gas exchange. The stomach and intestines are organs in the system, which breaks down food for the body to absorb. Each within a system performs a different role, and the system only functions properly when all its parts work together.
Match each term to its definition
Draw a line connecting each organ system on the left to its main organs and function on the right. Or write the matching letter next to each system name.
| Organ system | Your answer | Main components and major function |
|---|---|---|
| Circulatory | A. Lungs and air passages, responsible for gas exchange | |
| Respiratory | B. Heart, blood vessels, blood, transports substances around the body | |
| Digestive | C. Stomach and intestines, breaks down food and absorbs useful substances |
1. Explain why the heart alone is not the circulatory system. Name at least two other components and state the role of each.
2. The Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri), found in Queensland rivers, has a primitive lung that allows it to breathe air as well as using gills. Name the organ system this primitive lung belongs to, and explain why this makes the lungfish unusual compared with most fish.
