Penicillin resistance rose sharply from 0% in 1945 to 80% by 1960 [1], then slowed significantly, reaching only 97% by 2020 — the rate of increase levelled off after about 1975–1990, when nearly all susceptible strains in the hospital population had already been eliminated by selection pressure, leaving little further room for percentage increase [1].
